Clemens accuser says he ‘misspoke’ about evidence

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Roger Clemens‘ lawyer accused the baseball legend’s former strength coach of changing testimony “on the fly,” and the judge in the perjury trial imposed a time limit Friday on all future witnesses in an effort to speed things up.

Under relentless questioning in his fifth day on the stand, Brian McNamee admitted he “misspoke” while explaining some of the medical evidence he saved in a beer can.

“Isn’t this a classic example of you making up this stuff on the fly?” asked attorney Rusty Hardin, who spent three days of cross-examination trying to portray McNamee as a serial liar.

McNamee is the main prosecution witness in the case against Clemens, who is accused of lying to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. McNamee testified this week that he injected the seven-time Cy Young Award winner with steroids and human growth hormone.

Meanwhile, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton put both sides “on notice” that the trial needs to wrap up by June 8 ? or else it will have to recess for about a month because of various scheduling conflicts.

“And then we’ll have some real unhappy jurors,” Walton said.

The trial was supposed to last four to six weeks, but it’s now wrapping up its fifth week ? and the government said Friday it still has nine witnesses to call. That’s a decrease from the 14 witnesses the government stated on Thursday, but it wasn’t enough to keep Walton from imposing a 90-minute limit for each side on each witness once McNamee is done.

“I’ve never done this, and I hate to,” said Walton, who has been a judge for more than four decades.

Walton also said that closing arguments for each side will be limited to two hours.

McNamee has said he kept medical evidence after injecting Clemens with steroids in 2001 and stored some of the material in a Miller Lite beer can. But under cross-examination, he acknowledged that some of the items in the can were not in fact used on Clemens, such as a small bottle of human growth hormone, a needle to inject HGH and a bottle of saline solution used for such injections.

McNamee, Clemens’ former strength and conditioning coach, also testified that a pin included in the beer can might not have been used on Clemens. He said it was either used on Clemens or another player, whom he did not name.

Hardin is trying to raise doubts about the integrity of the evidence.

“You were a police officer for three years, you know about chain of custody?” he asked.

“A little bit,” McNamee replied.

“Haven’t you testified that everything in the beer can was for Roger?” Hardin asked.

“Not everything,” McNamee said. He added: “I’ve said that all along ? it could have been from three different players.”

Although Hardin expressed shock that some items in the beer can were not used on Clemens, McNamee told congressional investigators the same thing in 2008, prior to the hearing in which he and Clemens testified.

An investigator questioned the source of the HGH in the beer can, because McNamee said he injected Clemens with HGH only in 2000, not 2001. The investigator asked if it was Chuck Knoblauch, who has admitted taking HGH.

“It can only be Knoblauch,” McNamee replied.

Hardin angrily demanded to know how materials from other players “flew” into the beer can. When prosecutors objected, the lawyer said, “Well, how did they get in there?”

“I put them in the can that night” when he collected the items from Clemens, McNamee said.

When Hardin asked if McNamee ever told government investigators that he put the other players’ material in the beer can that night, McNamee said: “It’s never been asked that way before.”

“I misspoke; I’m sorry,” McNamee said.

DeadMau5 Ignites Twitter Feud, Calls Pauly D’s New Video ‘Garbage’

‘Night of My Life’ video ‘typical bottlepopping playpressing garbage im sure everyones sick of,’ deadmau5 tweets.

After putting to bed his feud with Madonna, it seems EDM star Deadmau5 is embroiled in a new Twitter beef, this time with MTV’s own DJ Pauly D.

It all began when Pauly posted a link to his new music video for the track “Night of My Life.” He asked his fans, followers and Twitter in general, “So how do you like the video?” Mau5 apparently checked it out and didn’t like what he saw.

“Well since you asked,” Deadmau5 tweeted, “I didn’t really enjoy it. it looked like it cost about $150 to make, and nothing really creative about it.”

For those wondering what made Mau5 so mad, the video’s concept is pretty simple and by all standards, pretty innocuous. It plays out almost like a mini-episode of Pauly’s MTV show, “The Pauly D Project,” following him from gig to gig, confetti and champagne flying everywhere. It also features some behind-the-scenes moments, including the “Jersey Shore” star hanging with his pals and meeting fans.

Pauly didn’t let the jab go, but did offer up a little quip to answer his fellow DJ’s dig. He tweeted, “T-Shirt $40 Jeans $120 Hair Gel $12 Being Hated On By Deadmau5#Priceless.”

Like any good feud, it didn’t end there. Dead’s response? “hating? the f—? you clearly don’t know me enough if you thought that was ‘hating’. was just some friendly-ish advice.”

Things continued to escalate on Dead’s side, with him tweeting responses including, “i’ll just leave it at: ‘Don’t blame your failure on haters. If everyone thinks you suck, they’re not haters, they’re right.’ – Daniel Tosh,” and in response to a fan, he added, “nah, i just thought it was a piece of sh–, in short. typical bottlepopping playpressing garbage im sure everyones sick of.”

“Well, now that Jersey (and quite possibly the rest of the eastern seaboard) ‘came at me bro’ i guess its time for bed soon,” Deadmau5 added before asking where Snooki is and then resigning, “im kidding. that was a joke. sorry.”

With Deadmau5 seemingly over the whole thing, Pauly pondered, “Wonder If I Could Get @Deadmau5 To DJ My Birthday ?? Now That Would Be The #NightOfMyLife.”

As the whole beef came to an end, Pauly had a few final words before ending the battle on his end. “Maybe He Just Needs Some Cheese To Go With His Whine … #WheresMyMau5Trap,” he said, then tweeted, “Well @DeadMau5 Today Was A Pleasure , Hope U Had Fun Too , But I Got Show To Watch Tonight #PaulyDProject U Should Tune In@MTV.”

Aaron Sorkin To Make Directorial Debut With ‘Steve Jobs’

‘The Social Network’ screenwriter will adapt the Apple co-founder’s biography for the big screen.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

From “The Social Network” to “Moneyball,” screenwriter Aaron Sorkin‘s work has been widely praised — the former landing him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Now he’s turning his sights on the highly anticipated “Steve Jobs.” Sony Pictures Co-Chairman Amy Pascal and president of Columbia Pictures Doug Belgrad announced Tuesday that Sorkin will pen the script based on the best-selling biography by award-winning journalist Walter Isaacson.

“Steve Jobs,” published October 2011, was Amazon’s best-selling book last year with sales exceeding 2,200,000. Sony bought the movie rights before the tome even released. Pascal commented on the announcement, saying, “Steve Jobs’ story is unique: He was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time. There is no writer working in Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we’re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing.”

Sorkin won’t just act as the screenplay writer. He’ll also be making his directorial debut and act as one of the film’s producers. Mark Gordon, Scott Rudin and Guymon Casady will produce the project as well.

This film is not to be confused with the other Jobs biopic, tentatively titled “Jobs: Get Inspired,” starring Ashton Kutcher.

Sorkin is currently in production for HBO’s “The Newsroom,” which is set to premiere on June 24. He’ll also try his hand as a librettist for the first time on Broadway’s 2013-14 production of “Houdini,” starring Hugh Jackman.

The ‘Diesel Sports Car’ Winner – Peugeot RCZ

Peugeot defies odds once more by winning the ?Diesel Sports Car? award with its RCZ HDi 163 model.

This is a great success for Peugeot. The superb RCZ HDi 163 managed to beat the likes of the Vauxhall Astra GTC and the MINI Roadster to take the award.

During the RCZ?s ?design-mode? years, few cars have caused such a stir. Well worth the wait though. This is a sleek, jaw-dropping, show styled coupe that is a match for any class leader.

Features are distinctive, such as the RCZ?s double-bubble roof and rear windscreen that blend well with the aluminium roof arches. In fact, everywhere you look there are eye-catching details including an electrically operated spoiler that rises automatically at speeds above 53mph.

The new car illustrates Peugeot?s commitment to capture the standards of the brand name; style, quality, durability and above all affordability.

Ian Robertson, Diesel Car editor, brings our attention to the trendy exterior design and curvy shape of the Peugeot RCZ and there is no doubt that this glamorous coupe, with its road-hugging stance, is one very attractive and striking car. It is also practical, elegant and roomy.

Iran’s tough nuclear stance masks struggles at top

(AP) ? The negotiating stance from Iranian officials never varies: The Islamic Republic will not give up its capabilities to make nuclear fuel. But embedded in the messages are meanings that reach beyond Tehran’s talks with world powers.

It points to the struggles within Iran’s ruling system as it readies for the next round of talks scheduled to begin next week in Baghdad.

Iran’s Islamic leadership ? which crushed an opposition groundswell nearly three years ago and later swatted back a power grab by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ? has now staked its political credibility on its ability to resist Western sanctions and hold firm to its rights under U.N. treaties to enrich uranium.

Any concessions ? either too great or too fast ? could risk internal rifts within Iran’s power structure. And that could draw powerful forces into the mix, including the Revolutionary Guard that acts as defender of the theocracy and overseer of the nuclear program. As talks deepen, so do the political considerations for an Islamic establishment that cannot afford to appear to come away empty handed.

“Insisting on a halt to enrichment is a deal breaker,” said Tehran-based political analyst Behrooz Shojaei. “It is Iran’s red line.”

This means smaller targets are likely necessary to keep dialogue alive after the Baghdad session next Wednesday between Iran and the six-nation group comprising the permanent U.N. Security Council members plus Germany.

A possible steppingstone goal for the U.S. and allies is to seek to halt Iran’s production of uranium enriched to 20 percent levels, the highest-grade material acknowledged by Tehran. The enrichment level is far above what’s needed for Iran’s lone energy-producing reactor, but it is appropriate for use in medical research. It also could be boosted to weapons-grade strength in a matter of months.

Iran insists it has no interest in developing atomic weapons, but it sees its uranium labs as a mainstay of its technological advances that include long-range missiles and an aerospace program that has promised another satellite launch this month. There still could be some room, however, for bargaining.

Iran has signaled it could consider ending the 20 percent enrichment. In return, though, it wants Washington and Europe to ease some of the most painful new sanctions, including those hitting Iran’s oil exports and its access to international banking networks.

Such demands would directly test the West’s flexibility.

Previously, Washington and European allies have insisted that Iran must take the first step and suspend all uranium enrichment as required by several U.N. Security Council resolutions. They also are under pressure from Israel to avoid protracted give-and-take negotiations.

Last week, the European Union’s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton met with Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to discuss the upcoming talks. Later, Ashton said she hoped for “concrete” results in Baghdad.

But the semiofficial Fars news agency quoted Gen. Yadollah Javani, a Revolutionary Guard adviser, as saying it’s too early to be optimistic.

“Iran does not trust the West,” he said. “The West should build the trust in the long run.”

Netanyahu derided the opening round of talks last month in Istanbul, mocking them as a “freebie” that gave Iran international cover to continue enriching uranium. Iran, in turn, has accused Israel of trying to destroy the negotiations as pretext to a possible military strike.

“All the sides are moving with extreme caution,” said Mustafa Alani, a regional affairs analyst at the Gulf Research Center based in Geneva. “It seems no one wants to give too much or say too much at this stage. But also no one wants to be portrayed as the side that killed the talks.”

This is the tricky ground being navigated by Iran.

Its leaders are desperate to avoid any impression of caving under the Western economic squeeze. Any serious rollbacks ? without Western concessions in return ? could open room for hard-liners to take pot shots at the ruling clerics. It also could put the Revolutionary Guard in the awkward position of defending the Islamic system against ultra-nationalists who normally side with the Guard.

The timing, too, brings added concerns for Iran.

Ahmadinejad is moving into his last year in office and the ruling theocracy is closely watching for any signs of an opposition resurgence before next year’s elections. It took months for the Revolutionary Guard to snuff out unprecedented street protests after Ahmadinejad’s disputed re-election in June 2009. Then the ruling system turned against Ahmadinejad last year after he tried to challenge the authority of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“Too much political capital has been invested in the nuclear program for … Khamenei to simply slink away and retreat,” wrote Iranian affairs analyst Afshin Molavi in Tuesday’s edition of The National newspaper in Abu Dhabi.

Even after the feuds with Khamenei, Ahmadinejad has been a loyal advocate to Iran’s negotiating positions at the talks.

“If the Westerners change their attitudes and pay respect to the Iranian nation, they will be treated respectfully by Iranians, in return,” Ahmadinejad said Monday during a tour of eastern Iran.

He added: “They should know that Iranian nation will not take a single step back from their basic rights” ? a clear reference to uranium enrichment.

In Vienna, envoys from Iran and the U.N. nuclear agency held a second day of talks over suspicions that Tehran might have tested atomic arms technology at a military site. Iran denies the claims.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has sought access to the Parchin base for more than four years. It also wants to interview scientists and review documents.

The IAEA believes Iran in 2003 ran explosive tests needed to set off a nuclear charge. The suspected blasts took place inside a pressure chamber, the agency said.

A senior diplomat familiar with the IAEA probe says Iran has never said whether the chamber existed. A computer-generated drawing provided to The Associated Press by a nation critical of Iran’s nuclear program shows such a structure. The official who shared it said the drawing was based on information from someone who saw the chamber.

Iranian envoy Ali Asghar Soltanieh told reporters in Vienna “everything is on the right track.” He described the atmosphere as “very constructive.”
